A Guide to Regenerative Medicine with Dr Mayorga

Dr MayorgaDr Oscar Mayorga

Dr. Mayorga is a surgeon, specialized in anti-aging medicine with a degree in Immunology & Microbiology and a specialization in Natural & Biologic Medicine. Moreover, Mayorga has experience in cellular activation, stem cells treatment and growth factors. He is currently the in-house medical consultant at SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain.

SHA Wellness Clinic is a pioneering well-being clinic, focused on improving and notably lengthening people's health and well-being through the fusion of the best therapies. When its doors opened to guests in November 2008, the hotel and clinic started a revolution in wellness - the world's first macrobiotic wellness resort. SHA's objective is for its guests to leave after a pleasant stay, feeling renewed inside and out, more alive and energetic with a much healthier appearance.

What does regenerative medicine consist of?

As a medical speciality it is understood as a group of biomedical and clinical therapies, that require the use of stem cells or plasma rich in platelets from the patient, biomaterials or medicine that promote the endogenous regeneration capacity. It also includes the possibility of tissue and organ growth in a laboratory to implement them depending of each patient’s case. It can be defined as the reparation and substitution of damaged cells, tissues and organs for ones that function better.

What is Stem Cell Therapy?

Stem Cell Therapy consists of taking the cells from our body that have the capacity to divide and differentiate themselves into diverse types of specialised cells and auto renovate themselves. They are providers of new cells that have the capacity to regenerate damaged cells. We can find them in different tissues in the body, especially in large amounts in adipose tissue and bone marrow.

Who can benefit from this treatment?

Aging is a natural process and we all experience a decrease in stem cells with age, as well as loss of plasticity, translating into aging. However, stem cell therapy can delay the process of aging and rejuvenate damaged cells, both in the skin as well as organs. Additionally, pathologies and lesions caused by wear and tear or trauma, like in the case of athletes, can be treated with this treatment.

What illnesses can be treated with Regenerative Medicine?

Many pathologies can be greatly improved, such as:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Degenerative osteoarthritis
  • Other chronic and degenerative diseases
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Alopecia
  • Facial dimorphisms
  • Diabetes
  • Neurodegenerative illnesses

Do you believe that this discipline will become more accessible and will replace other conventional methodologies, like in the case of cancer, chemotherapy?

Without a doubt, it will become more known and implemented by doctors and hospitals. Whether it’s going to replace conventional methodologies, I don’t believe we are there yet, however, there are different biotechnology and genetic engineering companies as well as multinationals working on new treatments for pathologies like cancer, and perhaps in the future we can see whether they will replace the current therapies being used.

Can you tell us a success story of one of your patients that was cured using this method?

Of course! Thanks to this innovative treatment, we’ve had many patients who within a couple of months following cell implants and intraarticular plasma have improved their mobility and decreased their symptoms between 70 and 80%, as well as a experienced significant improvement in the paraclinical and radiological exams, which is great for the patients and for us doctors, is a success. I don’t like to talk about curing patients, because in this case, we seek to improve and diminish the symptoms and manifestations of the pathology.

What hopes do you have for the future of medicine?

Without a doubt, these type of treatments with the advancements that await us in the future, give us the possibility of combating illnesses without the secondary effects that we have nowadays due to pharmaceuticals treatments, as well as the prevention and treatment of many illnesses and conditions including premature aging. If for example we have a damaged liver due to illness and we’re able to transplant the liver with a liver produced by stem cells from the patient (investigation and work that is already in progress), we will be taking a huge step in the direction of a new reality in human longevity and the medical practice.
