Reflexology in the Spotlight

Reflexology in the Spotlight

Reflexology is a harmonising therapy that involves the application of pressure to specific points, known as reflexes, to encourage the body to heal from within. The practice is based on the belief that the feet and hands mirror the body and that every organ in the body can be mapped onto areas of the feet called reflex points. By using these 'mini-maps', therapists are trained to stimulate reflex points on the map by using their thumbs and fingers and therefore bring about a positive effect on the corresponding parts of the body. Reflexology aims to facilitate a free flow of energy in the body so that we are balanced and healthy, any obstructions to this may result in illness. With ever increasing levels of stress in everyday life, it is important that people take responsibility for their well-being. Reflexology may mitigate stress, help you sleep better and improve your mood.

How does the treatment work?

Beforehand: you may be required to supply a medical history for the purpose of your treatment and asked to sign a consent form. This information will remain confidential and is purely for the expertise of the therapist.
During:
the treatment itself is very easy to receive. At most, you will be required to remove your socks and shoes so the therapist has access to the bare skin of the feet. The therapist will apply pressure to the feet, lower leg, hands, neck or face, depending on the type of reflexology chosen. The process should feel relaxing but you may feel discomfort at times, this is not abnormal.
Afterwards:
most people respond positively to reflexology treatments, reporting an increased sense of well-being and relaxation. If you feel lethargic or tearful, this could be part of the healing process initiated by reflexology, but make sure you check with your doctor or therapist before receiving another treatment.

Reflexology is so much more than a simple foot rub or hand massage; it is a powerful therapy which has been shown to have a very positive effect on health and well-being. According to reflexology research measuring brain activity, it not only creates relaxation but also reduces pain, improves blood flow and influences physiological measures of the body.

Reflexology comes as part of many of our well-being packages on offer. Take yourself toReads Yoga Detox in Mallorca where you will receive a 45 minute session and the opportunity of more, should you enjoy the experience. Grayshott Spa in Surrey also offers the treatment aimed at relaxing your spirit and calming the mind. To enjoy reflexology in a tropical setting, Shanti Maurice in Mauritius includes it as part of their de-stress programme, designed to achieve a sense of balance through a combination of meditative therapies.
